Brief summary in scientific language

Chronic pain is one of the most common diseases of our time. For this reason, one of the most important tasks of our health care system is to understand pain with all its effects on our areas of life and its economic aspects, and to provide it with adequate treatment options. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the implementation of this task much more challenging, because at the beginning of the pandemic, clinical operations had to be shut down as much as possible and adapted to the pandemic situation. In particular, elective outpatient contacts were often reduced. This was the only way to ensure that the wave of Covid 19 patients could be admitted and treated. This posed a great challenge for politics and the health system: On the one hand, an overload of the health system should be avoided, on the other hand, treatment should be offered to all patients in need. This should be made possible without neglecting infection protection and risking infection during outpatient treatment or clinic visits. This also includes the outpatient treatment of patients with chronic pain disorders. These patients are particularly at risk of contracting a severe form of COVID-19 due to various pre-existing conditions and the multimorbidity associated with them. On the other hand, they also have a greater need for close supervision and support due to their pain. For this reason, it is important to develop a particularly safe, but by no means inferior, solution for care with regard to infection protection, but also with regard to adequate treatment. The Interdisciplinary Pain Centre at the University Hospital of Freiburg made an effort early on in the course of the pandemic to switch to the video consultation form of treatment and thus adapt to the special circumstances. In the first part of the study, a retrospective data collection will take place. For this purpose, the data from the years 2020 and 2021 will be analysed with regard to the realised implementation of video consultation. In the second part of the study, a survey will be conducted to investigate how patients with chronic pain experience such a video consultation and what suggestions and proposals for improvement they have. The patients will be asked to fill out a short online questionnaire after a video consultation.

Interventions, Observational Groups

Arm 1:
The aim of the restrospective data analysis is an explorative evaluation of the implementation of video consultations in the Interdisciplinary Pain Centre of the Medical Center of Freiburg in the years 2020 and 2021. The aim of the online-based questionnaire survey is to record the experience/satisfaction of patients with chronic pain with telemedicine/video consultations in the context of current care.

Endpoints

Primary outcome:
Primary endpoint of the retrospective data analysis: number of video consultations in 2020 and 2021 in relation to telephone contacts and face-to-face consultations. Primary endpoint of the patient survey: satisfaction with video consultation/telemedicine.
Secondary outcome:
Secondary endpoint of the retrospective data analysis: group differences in the variables gender, age, distance of residence in relation to the number of video consultation hours. Secondary endpoints of the patient survey: advantages and disadvantages of telemedicine and technical difficulties with telemedicine.
