Brief summary in lay language

Aggressive behaviour seems to occur particularly frequently during body care, because people with dementia feel extremely troubled in this situation (Jackson et al., 1997; Beck et al., 1998, zit. in Halek & Bartholomeyczik, 2006, S. 46). Challenging behaviour is not only burdensome for person with dementia themselves but also for their social environment. Stress caused by challenging behaviour often evokes feelings of inadequacy and demoralization in nurses. With regard to physical activity and interaction the kinaesthetics approach could offer a way to a solution. In kinaesthetics, focused support of movements during activities of daily life promotes perception and thus facilitates self-control over the experience (Suter, Marty-Teuber, Knobel & Marty-Teuber, 2010). The aim of the study is to elaborate which factors are of particular importance for applying kineasthetics in order to reduce challenging behaviour in people with dementia during support in activities of daily living. The study is divided into four phases 1. A systematic review is performed to identify topically relevant knowledge. 2. Focus group interviews with kinaesthetics trainers and nurses are conducted to find out which factors are relevant for the application of kinaesthetics from the point of view of particular groups. 3. Observation aims to verify already existing data and to extend them. 4. Finally, on the basis of all data a model is elaborated, revealing different components of kinaestetics application as well as the interdependencies between the components.

Brief summary in scientific language

background: In the care of people with dementia often leads to challenging behavior, which is a demand-supply difficult, makes partly impossible and influenced the life quality of the people instrumental in supporting their life activities. Kinaesthetics as a concept to promote the perception of movement and self-control provides a targeted and appropriate interaction a possible solution. The concept has been used for years in the care of people with dementia. To date, there are no studies to what extent Kinaesthetics effect on challenging behavior during the support life activities. Objective: To develop an efficiency model (intervention, context, process, outcome) to reduce challenging behavior during the support life activities in people with dementia. The research project is oriented according to the guidelines of the Medical Research Council complex interventions based on three phases: First Phase: Describe evidence base for action of Kinaesthetics in people with dementia and challenging behavior Second Phase: Identify components of the Kinaesthetics intervention and their interrelationships Third Phase: Development and testing of Kinaesthetics-effect model. Method: Exploratory sequential mixed-methods design 1 Systematic Review 2 Four focus group interviews with Kinaesthetics-experts, nurses in two different institutions 3 video recordings during the support life activities at 5-8 people per institution, for 10 days (morning and evening). results: Through the study, new insights into the significance of the interaction of Kinaesthetics with challenging behaviors in people with dementia be gained and developed an impact model. Project financing: - Alzheimer's Association Switzerland - Ebnet Foundation - Swiss professional association nursing staff / care professionals.
