Brief summary in lay language

In Germany, a doubling of people suffering from dementia from 1.55 million (2015) up to 3 million in 2050 is predicted. General Practitioners (GPs) are the first contact person of people with health problems. That’s why GPs are in optimal position to increase awareness of all sorts of dementia. Especially people with a migration background require particular attention. The BaDeMi Project aims at improving dementia diagnostics in general practice through a reduction of barriers among doctors and patients. In the course of the first study, experiences, potential barriers on the doctor’s and patient’s side as well as possibilities to improve dementia diagnostics should be detected. Special focus is laid on patients with a migration background. A random sample of 1,000 GPs in NRW will be contacted with a letter containing the questionnaire that had to be filled in.

Brief summary in scientific language

In Germany, a doubling of prevalence of dementia from 1.55 million (2015) up to 3 million in 2050 is predicted. General Practitioners (GPs) are the first contact person of people with health problems, also when they notice first symptoms of dementia. That’s why GPs are in optimal position to increase awareness of all sorts of dementia. Especially people with a migration background require particular attention because diagnostic tools of dementia are language-based, cross-cultural adaption is missing and the syndrome and underlying diseases are tabooed or handled differently in some cultures. Moreover a less frequent use of health services is reported. The BaDeMi Project aims at improving dementia diagnostics in general practice through a reduction of barriers among doctors and patients. In the course of the cross-sectional study, experiences, potential barriers on the doctor’s and patient’s side as well as possibilities to improve dementia diagnostics should be detected. Special focus is laid on patients with a migration background. A random sample of 1,000 GPs in NRW will be contacted with a letter containing the standardized questionnaire.

Interventions, Observational Groups

Arm 1:
A cross-sectional study among a random sample of 1,000 GPs in North-Rhine Westphalia will be conducted. They will be asked about their experiences with patients suffering from dementia or showing symptoms of demetia as well as barriers in diagnostics and possibities to support them. A Focus is set on patients with a migration background. GPs were contacted with a letter containing the standardized survey, a covery letter, a letter of explanation and a post-paid envelope. There were asked to participate. Statistical analyses of the results will be conducted.

Endpoints

Primary outcome:
The aim of this cross-sectional study is the identification of barriers in dementia diagnostics in general practice among people with and without a migration background A random sample of 1000 GPs in North Rhine-Westphalia will receive a standardized, written survey in September 2017. They have got the possibility to participate in the following three month.
Secondary outcome:
Another objective is the identification of established methods of dementia diagnostics in general practice and possible ways to support GPs in diagnostics and treatment of patients suffering from dementia. A random sample of 1000 GPs in North Rhine-Westphalia will receive a standardized, written survey in September 2017. They can participate in the following three month.
